Fire hits tower of French cathedral in Rouen

A fire broke out this Thursday in the spire of Rouen Cathedral, in France, which has been undergoing renovation since the beginning of the year. The origin of the fire is still unknown and “all public resources are being mobilized†to the location, the mayor, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

The alert was given at 12 noon local time, firefighters told Agence France-Presse. The head of the corporation said, in statements to journalists at the scene, that the fire is being extinguished and that in the next hour the firefighters must ensure that there are no re-ignitions.

The work being carried out on the 151-meter-high spire is the final phase of the cathedral’s renovation, which has been ongoing since 2015, according to “Le Mondeâ€. The spire, one of the highest in Europe, was inaugurated in 1876 to replace the previous one, destroyed in a fire in 1822. French authorities concluded that the choice of cast iron as the only material for the structure proved inadequate in the long term. , explains the French daily.
