Joana Marques Vidal, former attorney general of the Republic, has died

Former Attorney General of the Republic Joana Marques Vidal died this Tuesday at the age of 68, according to the newspaper Observador and confirmed by Expresso. Joana Marques Vidal was hospitalized, in a coma, at the Hospital de São João, in Porto, where she was admitted on June 6, transferred from a private hospital unit where she had undergone surgical intervention, following of a “prolonged and very complex neoplastic disease”, Expresso knows.

Joana Marques Vidal was the first woman to hold the position of Attorney General of the Republic between October 12, 2012 and October 12, 2018.

The wake will take place on the 10th of July, between 2pm and 10pm, at the Capela de São Lourenço, in Pedações – Ãgueda, and the funeral ceremonies will take place at 2pm on the day July 11, followed by cremation at the Aveiro crematorium, informs the Public Ministry in a note published on the official website. The seventh day mass will be celebrated at the Basilica da Estrela, in Lisbon, on the 15th of July at 7pm.

“The Attorney General of the Republic, the Attorney General of the Republic and the Superior Council of the Public Ministry express deep regret at the death of retired Deputy Attorney General Maria Joana Raposo Marques Vidal, who served as Attorney General of the Republic in the years 2012 to 2018”, we also read.

The Presidency of the Republic has already issued a condolence note. “Joana Marques Vidal played an important role in Portuguese society, as an illustrious jurist, judge with deep social concerns and leadership roles, namely as Attorney General of the Republic,†says the note signed by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who says she was in Porto two weeks ago, where she was admitted to the Hospital de São João, following “her fight for life†.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa writes that Joana Marques Vidal “gained the respect and support of peers, subordinates and society in general, never ceasing to dedicate herself to a democratic pedagogy, with emphasis on civic participation and the defense of fundamental rights, highlighting the role of women and the defense of the most fragile and discriminated against”.

“The President of the Republic, who just two weeks ago followed his fight for life in Porto, presents his most emotional feelings to his Family and many Friends and Travel Companions,†he concludes.

Joana Marques Vidal was born in Coimbra in 1955 and graduated in Law at the University of Lisbon. He had a career linked to Family and Minors Law, having been president of APAV-Portuguese Victim Support Association, between 2007 and 2012, the year in which he assumed the Vice-presidency of the Association’s Board of Directors. He was a member of the Board and President of the General Assembly of the Union of Public Prosecutors. She also served as Deputy Director of the Center for Judicial Studies.

In October 2018, and after a controversial departure from the PGR, at the end of her first term, she was decorated by the President of the Republic with the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Christ.
