Johnny Cash entered the 90s broke and forgotten: what does ‘Songwriter’, the ‘lost’ album that we only now know about, reveal?

Johnny Cash can only be compared to Johnny Cash. And the Cash who now reveals himself here, in this posthumous “Songwriter†, is not the outlaw from ‘Folson Prison Blues’, nor the dark man from ‘Man in Black’ or even the wise old man of “American Recordings†, the late work produced by Rick Rubin that in 1994 restored the iconic aura that his recordings from the 80s almost obliterated. And that is the only reason why the album that his son John Carter Cash conjured up from models recorded in 1993 should not be considered one of the records of the year.
