Shipwreck: Santana Lopes promises to “help all families experiencing such a tragic time”

The president of the Chamber of Figueira da Foz promised this Wednesday support to the victims of the shipwreck that occurred in the early hours off the beaches of Leiria and which caused three deaths among the municipality’s fishing community.

In statements to journalists, after visiting the injured under observation at the Figueira da Foz District Hospital, Pedro Santana Lopes said that the municipality will move forward with psychological, moral and companionship support.

“Then we will see the conditions in which they live, the means they have and see what they need in terms of other types of material”, said the mayor, who contacted the master of the vessel “which is in a state of shock and cannot articulate a word”.

According to Santana Lopes, the municipality will monitor the situation and will take whatever initiatives it sees fit to “help all the families living through such a tragic time”.

The mayor confirmed that two of the fatal victims are from Buarcos and the other from Lavos and that the three still missing fishermen also belong to the municipality’s fishing community.

To journalists, Pedro Santana Lopes said that the injured under observation at the Figueira da Foz District Hospital, including the boat’s master, are in a state of shock and are unable to talk about the incident. what happened.

The alert for the listing of the fishing vessel “Virgem Dolorosa” off the beaches of São Pedro de Moel and Vieira de Leiria was given at 04:33 to the local command of the Nazaré Maritime Police .

Three crew members died, 11 were rescued and there are three missing, natives of Praia da Leirosa, in Figueira da Foz.

Seven of 11 of those rescued were admitted to the Figueira da Foz District Hospital, one of which was in serious condition, informed the clinical director, Sónia Campelo Pereira.

According to the doctor, the most seriously injured person is 57 years old and will be transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Coimbra Hospitals (HUC) with respiratory problems.

“Three of the victims have already been discharged and another three are under observation”, revealed the director of hospital care at Hospital Distrital da Figueira da Foz, in a new situation report made shortly before 12:00 next to the Emergency Service.
