Socialists, independentists, a combination of both or new elections: the process of forming the next Catalan government begins

The regional Parliament of Catalonia takes office this Monday, following the autonomous elections on May 12th. The constitutive session, scheduled for 4pm (3pm in mainland Portugal), takes place when the results of Sunday’s European elections are already known, which will have an influence on the complex negotiations to form a Government in Catalonia.

This autonomous Spanish community, submerged for more than ten years in a serious conflict between its institutions (dominated by independentists) and the central State, emerged from the May elections with a new and complicated political map. The starting point is unprecedented in decades: For the first time in 40 years, separatist forces do not have a sufficient parliamentary majority to ensure the regional government.
