Ukraine: there are 90 confirmations for the Swiss peace summit, but Biden’s absence will be noted. What to expect?

The famously neutral Switzerland is taking a giant step towards the West with the organization of the peace summit promoted by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, leader of one of the belligerent parties in the biggest conflict on European soil since the Second World War. “Just the fact that Switzerland is organizing this summit is already a positive aspect about this summit,†Raquel Vaz-Pinto, researcher at the Institute of International Relations of the University, begins by telling Expresso Nova de Lisboa and professor of Asian Studies at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the same university, who, moreover, confesses to being relatively optimistic regarding the summit’s prospects for success.

The very moment in which the conference takes place is a theme in itself. “For the last few weeks we have seen a different assertiveness in Europe, which has been embodied, on the one hand, in this idea that Ukraine can use weapons against Russian military targets that are positioned inside Russia, and also with the sending of French instructors to Ukraine, essentially, as bait for instructors from various countries to come. Then there is this issue of the no-fly zone, which is starting to take shape and which also seems to me to be a significant advance from a discursive point of view,” says the researcher from the same institute, to Expresso.
