Viktor Orbán says European court fine is “scandalous and unacceptable”

It only took a few hours for the Hungarian Prime Minister to react to the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) that penalized Hungary for not complying with asylum policies. “The CJEU’s decision to fine Hungary 200 million euros plus one million euros per day for defending the borders of the European Union is scandalous and unacceptable,†wrote Viktor Orbán, on your account on the social network X, this Thursday, the 13th.

For the Hungarian conservative leader, “it seems that illegal migrants are more important to Brussels bureaucrats than their own European citizens†.

The CJEU today ordered Hungary to pay a fine of 200 million euros and a penalty of one million euros for each day of delay for non-compliance with asylum policy, considering that Budapest “deliberately circumvented the application § of a common policy†of the EU – in this case, of welcoming applicants for international protection – which, according to a statement, “constitutes an unprecedented violation and exceptionally serious nature of Union law†.

The Hungarian Government adopted, in 2015, a tough policy in the face of the migration crisis caused by the war in Syria and which it has maintained ever since.
