Belgian Prime Minister formally resigns to the King

The King of the Belgians, Philip I, today accepted the formal request to resign from office presented by the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander de Croo, following his party’s defeat in Sunday’s legislative elections.

With this step, the process begins to form a new coalition government in the country, with the king meeting with party leaders for a first assessment.

This afternoon, the president of the Flemish conservatives of the NV-A, Bart de Wever, the party with the most votes at national level, and the French-speaking liberals of the MR, Georges-Louis Bouchez, will go to the royal palace.

De Croo’s Flemish Christian Democrat party (VDL) suffered a heavy electoral defeat on Sunday, leading the head of the coalition government to announce his departure from office.

The N-VA leader expressed his desire to assume leadership of the Government, contrary to what happened in 2019.

Negotiations for the formation of the federal executive in Belgium are traditionally difficult and prolonged, given the need to include parties from Flanders (Dutch-speaking) and Wallonia (French-speaking) with different sensibilities and objectives.

On February 17, 2011, Belgium broke the world record for the longest political crisis, with 249 days of political impasse without a Government.
