New version of the Citizen Card available from this Tuesday

The new generation of the Citizen Card, with a larger photo and which does not require the use of a card reader, opening up new forms of use such as the use of a transport ticket, is available from this Tuesday.

The production of the new version of the identification document has already started and the first card will be delivered today, a source from the Ministry of Justice explained to Lusa.

This new generation was announced by the outgoing Government, in March, as being a “more complete, safer, more digital” and “very innovative” card, with ‘contactless’ technology for simplify the reading of information and open up new ways of using it.

In line with the latest European legislation and security standards, the new card has a second chip with ‘contactless’ technology for greater physical and electronic security, allowing you to leverage its use either in public services or in the private sector, without the need to use a card reader, explains the Ministry on its website.

It is through ‘contactless’ technology that the new Citizen Card will be able to be used as a transport ticket throughout the country, making it possible to associate electronic tickets for shows, in addition to being able to serve as a means authentication in a digital or in-person service.

Although it is a physical card, around 50% of the features are digital, integrating more than 30 physical, electronic and digital security elements, with innovative materials, highlighting the Ministry that the card remains It is, to date, one of the most secure identity documents in the world.

The photograph of the new card holder now has larger dimensions, to allow better identification of the Citizen Card holder, and the chip is now on the back.

The new Citizen Card also aims to improve precision and efficiency in border control and security processes, also guaranteeing secure and forgery-proof travel documents.
