Portugal in the middle of the European ‘table’ with GDP growth of 1.5%

The European economy grew in the first quarter of the year. In the euro zone there was growth of 0.4% in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and in the European Union (EU) of 0.5%, show Eurostat data released this Friday. Portugal was practically in the middle of the ‘table’, having recorded the twelfth highest increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Among the 27 Member States, in a year-on-year comparison, Malta was the economy that grew the most (4.6%), followed by Croatia (3.9%) and Cyprus (3.4%) , while Ireland (-5.9%), Austria (-1.3%) and Finland (-1.2%) showed the biggest declines.

In turn, Portugal recorded the twelfth biggest increase in GDP, with the Portuguese economy growing 1.5%.

In the chain variation, that is, compared to the last quarter of 2023, GDP grew 0.3% in both areas.

In this case, the biggest increase also occurred in Malta (1.3%), followed by Cyprus and then Croatia (1.2% and 1%, respectively). At the other extreme are Denmark (-1.8%), Estonia (-0.5%) and the Netherlands (-0.1%).

Compared to the end of 2023, the Portuguese economy grew 0.8%, the eighth largest increase.
