Russia thanks China for refusing to participate in Ukraine Peace Summit

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov today thanked his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, for refusing to participate in the Peace Summit taking place on June 15th and 16th in Switzerland.

According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a note, cited today by the Efe agency, Lavrov “thanked the Chinese partners for their balanced and consistent position on the crisis in Ukraine, for which Beijing decided not to will send their representatives to the Peace Summit in Switzerland.”

Moscow insisted that this meeting does not envisage Russia’s participation, nor does it take into account “all peace initiatives and current realities”.

On the sidelines of the BRICS group summit, which is taking place in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod, Lavrov and Wang also highlighted the importance of coordinating their countries’ foreign policies in various multilateral formats.

Kiev previously assured that Ukraine is in active dialogue with Beijing on how to achieve peace and is convincing the Chinese side that the principle of territorial integrity is fundamental for both countries and, therefore, “it must be the basis of any peace plan”.

To date, more than 100 countries and international organizations have confirmed their participation in the Peace Summit for Ukraine, which will take place on the 15th and 16th of June in Switzerland.

The BRICS Group currently represents more than 42% of world production and is expected to change the world economy by 2030.

At the beginning of this year 2024, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates joined the group of emerging economies which, until then, included Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
