“Societies are less racist, but support racist parties”: the “great paradox”, according to French historian Jean-Frédéric Schaub

Born in Paris, Jean-Frédéric Schaub is a professor at School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS) since 1996. He was part of the Hispanic Studies Group at the Center for Historiographical Research at that institution, where he assumed the direction of the Center for Portuguese Studies. Since 2011, he has collaborated with the Laboratory of American Worlds and the Center for Research on Colonial and Contemporary Brazil, whose board of directors he has been a member of since 2012.

Among the books he published are “Portugal na Monarquia Hispânica (1580-1640)†, published in Portugal in 2001, and “For a Political History of the Race†(Tinta da China, 2022 ). It was about the latter that he spoke to Expresso at the French Embassy in the Portuguese capital, hours before presenting it at the Lisbon Book Fair.
