UN Security Council supports Biden’s proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza

The UN Security Council approved this Monday a resolution that welcomes the proposed ceasefire in Gaza announced by the US President and urges Israel and Hamas to “fully implement its terms, without delay and without conditions”.

The resolution, authored by the United States, received 14 votes in favor and one abstention from Russia.

This is the Security Council’s first resolution on a ceasefire plan that aims to end the eight-month war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

On May 31, Biden announced what he described as a new Israeli proposal, calling it “a roadmap for a lasting ceasefire and the release of all hostages”, consisting of three phases.
